Tips / Emergency tips

What to do with …

... toothache?

You can temporarily take a suitable painkiller to relieve the discomfort (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.). Please read the package leaflet carefully for the correct dosage and/or ask at your pharmacy.

Toothache can have many different causes, e.g. tooth decay, excessive pressure on the teeth due to teeth grinding or fillings and crowns that no longer fit exactly. You should therefore always visit our practice so that we can get to the bottom of your complaints.

... very severe toothache or swelling of the cheek?

Make an appointment with us as soon as possible or, outside our opening hours, contact the dental emergency service.

... pain or gum inflammation in the wisdom teeth?

Painkillers and medicinal mouth rinses with the active ingredient chlorhexidine, which you can buy at the pharmacy, can help temporarily.

In any case, please visit our practice as soon as possible. We check whether the wisdom teeth are growing straight and have enough space in the jaw or should be removed.

... inflammation of the gums?

Use a medicated mouth rinse containing the active ingredient chlorhexidine. You can obtain them from the pharmacy.

However, do not use the rinsing solution over a longer period of time, as it can lead to discolouration of the teeth and temporarily impair the sense of taste.

Make an appointment if you suffer from frequent gum inflammation so that we can find the cause and treat it at an early stage.

Regular dental cleanings by our dental hygienists effectively prevent gum inflammation and are a very important measure for maintaining your oral health.

... sensitive teeth / tooth necks?

Exposed tooth necks are often the main cause of sudden toothache when consuming hot or cold food and drinks. Exposed tooth necks can be caused by inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis as well as night-time teeth grinding or an incorrect brushing technique.

Various products such as sensitive toothpastes, various mouthwashes or jellies are temporarily available to alleviate the symptoms.

In the case of very extensive defects or severe pain/sensitivity, a tooth-coloured filling is often necessary. We will be happy to provide you with further information and find the right therapy for you.

... a loose filling, crown or bridge?

Make an appointment with us to repair the affected tooth or to reattach the crown/bridge. If you have no pain in the affected tooth, a lost reconstruction is not an emergency and you can temporarily reattach it using toothpaste or denture adhesive cream.

... a dental accident?

Every dental accident should be reported to the dentist and the accident insurance company. Depending on the severity of the injuries, immediate treatment is important. We will always try to offer you an appointment immediately.
If one or more teeth are loose, displaced or even completely knocked out, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. If action is taken quickly and correctly, the injured teeth can usually be preserved.
You should also see a dentist as soon as possible if your wound is bleeding heavily and you are in a lot of pain.
If only small corners of the dental crowns are chipped or if you do not notice any damage to the teeth or gums, call us as soon as possible. Immediate treatment is not always necessary in such cases, but every accident should be shown to a dentist and reported to the insurance company in order to avoid long-term consequences and the associated costs.
